The history of the Audi 100 Sedan dates back to the mid-1960s, a period of profound corporate reorganization in the German automotive industry. In 1964, Volkswagen Group acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, taking over the manufacturing facilities located in Ingolstadt. The initial objective of Volkswagen's executive board was to use Ingolstadt's production capacity exclusively to meet the high demand for the Volkswagen Beetle, strictly forbidding the development of new models under the Audi badge.
